When the pharmacy sends them a refill request via fax, they frequently lie and claim the pharmacy never sent it. The same thing if the insurance company sends them some crucial form via fax. Countless times I have watched my pharmacist fax the form over with my own eyes. When I call them 5 minutes later they will claim it was never sent. Usually without even checking the machine.
They also in the past have suddenly decided to stop filling prescriptions for certain meds. Just out of the blue "oh, we won't write scripts for that anymore." And it always happens when you're due or overdue for a refill.
I know there aren't a lot of options in Corpus, but please DO NOT GO HERE if you can help it!
For example, I've asked Lopez for help with my migraines. He says he doesn't treat migraines and that I have to ask my GP or a neurologist for that (and he won't refer anyone to a neurologist, by the way, which is maddening.); but other doctors, no matter their specialty, are frequently extremely reluctant to issue you a prescription for anything if you're under the care of a pain management doctor because of a fear of interactions and the fact that the pain doc could drop you for getting any script from another doctor.
I was referred to this location by my primary care physician. They are the only place that accepts my insurance. I was contacted after the referral was received and given an assesment over the phone to present to the doctor. This morning I get a call and they tell me "..Based upon your answers you provided to the questionnaire...we are not able to see you at this time and are referring you back to your primary doctor." I was in shock as I am in need of a pain management doctor being a cancer patient and not being able to travel to Houston to MD Anderson as they don't take my insurance. What my responses had to do with this doctors decision...I have no clue...but to outright not provide explanation seems to be a selective process to me and I will be filing a complaint with the board. I need help and was denied.
And if/when you have an issue, don't expect any recourse through the office manager. Especially if you talk to her on the phone. She seems to be one of those people that has a chip on her shoulder towards everyone and thinks she is always right. Even if she can be proved wrong through a paper trail, she will insist that she's right, that the clinic has done nothing wrong and is perfect, and that it's you that is a stubborn moron.
And it isn't that they just have a crappy fax machine, which they try to claim sometimes. I've had this issue for years as have other patients. They've had this problem at two separate locations and have been through a few fax machines. It's the staff, not the machine or the line.
They also frequently call at the last minute to reschedule or cancel appointments. Then they get angry with you if you say you can't reschedule or even that you're already on your way to the clinic for your appointment that's been on the schedule for months.
The main issue, though, is that the office staff is largely abysmal. They have no qualms about holding your med refills ransom when there's a payment dispute, no matter how minor. They once held up my refills because they claimed I owed them $5. And one of my meds is potentially deadly to stop taking cold turkey. I pointed this out, but was told that I had better drive up there and pay that $5 quickly then. They know that once you're established with a pain management clinic, especially if you need opioids, it is nearly impossible to switch to a new clinic and they use this to their advantage.
Please, whatever you do, DO NOT GO TO THIS CLINIC if you have any other options. Once you've signed their contract (which is pretty standard among pain management clinics. It's a way to limit frauds from getting opioids) and they start writing you scripts, it's extremely difficult to switch clinics or even to get meds from doctors in different specialties.
Dr Lopez himself is okay, but the clinic as a whole is an absolute mess. There are constantly secondary doctors and physicians assistants coming and going. And they usually tend to leave on very short notice, which throws everything in to chaos for a few months while Lopez and the nurses try to play catch-up.
This is the worst place anyone could ever be referred to. I had a Spinal cord tumor removed and in pain. This sorry clinic wouldn't even see me. This is after my insurance referred them. The people who I spoke with on the phone were so rude. They acted like if they were the ones in pain. They would not give me the reason why they didn't accept me. And I was speaking with the office Manager, very rude person! I would advise everyone NOT to go to this establishment. I will talk to my insurance and tell them not to refer Corpus Christi Pain Medicine to absolutely NO ONE! SOMEONE NEEDS TO LOCK THE DOORS TO THIS PLACE! To me they just want the easy money from the insurance companies. THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT PAIN MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONALS!
They've even done it with meds that are dangerous to quit taking cold turkey. I've had to beg my GP before to write me a script for those meds (always with Lopez's knowledge and consent, by the way. Because if I didn't get that he could decide to drop me as a patient and stop filling any of my meds) even if it was only enough to safely wean me off them.
When I've pointed out to the clinic that it's unethical and potentially deadly to do that to people, I've gotten a snide "if you're that worried about it, go to the ER."
Thanks to our lazy federal law enforcement our family doctors aren't qualified to prescribe pain medication. So they have to send you to places like this. Mandatory that you use their private lab that charged my insurance over $6000 dollars for a urinalysis. Shame on them.
